900 million Android devices
May 28, 2013
This video is from Google I/O 2013 so it has been around for a couple of weeks. But it's still impressive figures. They have activated 900 million Android devices in only a couple of years. In 2011 it was 100 million, in 2012 400 million and now it's almost 1 billion devices activated. Mobility is everywhere and everyone, almost, has access to it. This is truly a revolution that will put information and command in everyone's hand eventually.

What is the next mobile operating system?
January 14, 2013

Background

Just six years ago we had only three major operating systems (families) to care about. It was Windows, Mac OS and sometimes Linux. Of course there were mobile phone operating systems as well, but that was only a small niche market. We only had to care about desktop and laptop computers. That was how we gathered information and enjoyed content. There were also specialized rugged mobile computers for warehouse and field operations and they mostly used Windows CE or Windows Mobile. In a way Windows CE/Mobile can be considered a proprietary operating system, used nowhere else but in these devices. Well, Microsoft tried many times to get Windows Mobile PDA:s into every business persons hand but it never took off. But the developer community was vivid and the family ties to the desktop Windows platform was strong. It was [...]

Time to upgrade your Volvo with an on-board computer?
January 11, 2013
I like mobile solutions and I like cars. A combination of both is brilliant and especially when the solution is built in. Hopefully the system is not too closed but open for app developers. It's a device for after market sales. New cars will be supplied with a factory installed cloud based solution. But that makes you wonder why they haven't chosen an on-board computer? Wireless coverage isn't that good everywhere... Yet.

Is it a phone or is it a tablet?
January 8, 2013
Huawei, the Chinese phone maker that is fighting to gain traction with its low-cost handsets, took a few pot shots at Samsung on Monday at CES 2013, announcing a device that pushed the definition of “phone” itself. The company unveiled its new Ascend Mate, clocking in at 6.1 inch, it's the biggest Android phone yet. Or is it a tablet? Huawei also touted its  “magic tough” technology, allowing users to effectively touch the phone’s screen when wearing a glove. Great for cold countries, they say. I wonder what's behind that magic. Huawei Ascend Mate Huawei Ascend Mate

Tablets and smart phones represent 70% of all IT equipment sold in 2012
November 14, 2012
According to a Gartner report it's estimated that around 821 million tablets and smart phones are sold during the year 2012. Sales will increase to around 1.2 billion in 2013. That's huge numbers for a product that got traction in the market less than 3 years ago with the release of the iPad in April, 2010. The introduction of 7 inch tablets has been a great success. For many it's handier with a 7 inch than a 10 inch tablet. Interestingly IHS believes that Windows RT/8 tablets will focus on larger displays then Android and iOS tablets. I beg to [...]
